One Person's Trash

Since today is Earth Day, and we are supposed to be looking for more ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, I thought it was only appropriate to share this great find.

Yesterday, I was driving home from a meeting, chatting on the phone with my mom. (I know - Shut up and drive.) As I pulled onto my block, I saw this prize in my neighbor's brush pile. I quickly pulled into my driveway, ran across the street and asked if she was actually throwing it away, and if she was, could I take it. She said yes. She was only using it to hold the pruned branches of her rose bushes. Yea me!
I have never been afraid to ask people for their unwanted things. I have a trestle table and bench, a ladder back chair, a dining table with two upholstered chairs, lawn furniture for my mother's front yard....The list is endless. Unfortunately, that leaves me with a very full garage, so I will have to find something productive to do with this soon before my husband adds another item to his ever growing list of reason to leave me.

I think it will be great for holding pots of annuals. Now I have to go buy flowers.

I have lots more fun pictures that I have taken this month. I just have to get my thoughts together for the post that will go with it.

PS - What is the best thing you have ever found and brought home?

.... I love your wagon and immediately thought about using it as a planter.

What is the best thing we've ever found and brought home?

Sam.

Sam was wandering along the Interstate when my husband spotted him. No one responded to our flyers, so Sam became ours. He was a Golden Retriever, a true gentleman, who honestly seemed like a person inhabiting the body of a dog. He would constantly knock our hand or arm to make us continue to pet him. He was quiet and sweet. When we took him to the Vet for a check-up, an x-ray showed many, many tiny pieces of lead -- remnants of a pellet gun or buckshot that had torn through his sweet body.

Years later, a huge tumor was found all around his heart, and we had to have him put to sleep. But for those years that he lived with us, he rested easily and enjoyed life.

So, Sam was definitely the best thing we ever found and brought home!

We have a wonderful antique dresser that someone had kicked to the curb--we just love it!

What a great little wagon Annemarie. I thought James may like to be pulled around in it....I know Joseph would love it.

I have been collecting things from the side of the road all my life...my father taught me from a very early age what fun it was to rummage through things people left out on "clean up" day. For example 2 lovely outdoor chairs, an exercise bike (which I used for a few months and now it lays idle in my shed!)and numerous other items.

BUT the best thing I ever found was a CAR. My friend Reiner and I were driving somewhere when we noticed a car with a sign saying "please take me". It had run out of registration and the owner couldn't afford to register it. Luckily we had a tow bar on our car so we towed it back to Reiner's place where he got it ready for registration and gave it to his son to drive.

Happy days mate
Peg

PS I love Roban's story about SAM, how precious a find is that!

I haven't "found" many things. I blogged about dumpster diving to get the Little Tikes easel for K and N and that is about it! I'm not sure if I'm oblivious or just unlucky!

Roban, what a lovely story about Sam. So sad what people do to animals. I am not the best fan of pets, but I wouldn't dream of harming my Zoey. There are just some awful people out there.

Julie, you may not find things on the side of the road, but you recently were the master milk cap finder for sure.

Octamom - I am still looking for that perfect dresser for my mother's house...One day I will find it and hopefully I will have the truck handy.

Peggy - A CAR!!! Wow, not that was a find. Glad it was able to be put to good use.

MJ - Every other Wednesday is bulk trash day in my neighborhood. My mother's neighborhood it is the Thursday in the other week. I suppose if I didn't work full time, I could make quite a living refurbishing the things I find. Alas, there are not enough hours in the day.

You scored a Radio Flyer?! I'm impressed.

I don't think I've ever really found anything good to bring home like that. There was a recliner out by the dumpster once that looked like it was in pretty good shape and that I would have liked to have, but by the time I found someone to help me bring it in, someone else had claimed it.

Way cool. I had a wagon similar to this when I was James' age. Do the sides come off of this one? I could take the wooden panels off of mine.
